Joon Hee Kim’s work explores the human existence by examining and reconciling diverse identities and heritages, as well as the compelling forces of beauty and desire. She uses the unique language of ceramics to communicate her thoughts and observations to the world. Kim’s pieces are sculptural interpretations of the human form as a vessel. Central to her work is the subject of individuality and imperfection through the analysis of historical objects and contemporary concerns.

Her exquisite sculptures show attention to detail and exhibit the value of the creative making process. Kim hand-builds the foundational forms, to which she adds press-moulded elements for embellishment. She then applies glaze and the pieces are fired repeatedly until the desired surface design is achieved. She often finishes her pieces with gold lustre or mother-of-pearl to give her work a radiant quality.
