Mother and Calf Belugas

Drawing inspiration from an intimate relationship with the animals of the Canadian Arctic, Inuit carvers immortalize them in stone.

Approximately 10 x 14 x 5 cm
Stone carving, serpentinite

Born in Kuujjuarapik, Daniel Kumarluk is an Inuk artist living in Umiujaq, Nunavik Quebec. He learned to carve at the age of 16 by watching accomplished carvers from his community. Using argillite to create small, smooth sculptures, he also works with walrus bones to make knives and earrings. Inspired by northern life, he often sculpts family, hunting scenes, and animals like bears and whales.
