Born in 1931 in Hanningajuq (Garry Lake), Annie has spent her long life mastering the art of tapestry. She moved to Qamani’tuaq (Baker Lake) in 1972 where the first sewing shop was established. This sewing workshop was the hub for many of the textile artists like Jessie Oonark, Irene Avaalaaqiaq Tiktaalaaq, and Taipana’s mother Elizabeth Angrnaqquaq Qiayuq. Her husband, Jimmy, and son, John, are well-known sculptors.

Her wall hangings are extensively embroidered in luminous colours, which give them an impressionistic quality. Annie fills her working surface with images of animals or people that appliqued felt onto duffle cloth with extensive embroidery. She usually covers the background in embroidery as well. The stitches she favours are cross stitch, feather, fly, stem and chain stitch. Annie’s use of stitching brings texture to her characters; the stitch she often employs resembles fur, pine needles, or feathers – giving it the name “feather stitch.”
